Mission & History
Country Information
Madagascar, situated off the southeastern coast of Africa, is home to over 30 million people. The country faces significant economic challenges, with a GDP per capita of only $531, placing it among the lowest globally. Tamatave, a major city in Madagascar, exemplifies the country’s economic disparities, where many children suffer from poverty and lack of shelter, often living as street children. The socio-economic conditions in Madagascar are further exacerbated by natural disasters like Cyclone Gezani, which have devastated infrastructure and increased vulnerability.
The Need in 2026
The need for the project arises from the severe impact of Cyclone Gezani that destroyed essential infrastructure, including an orphanage in Tamatave. This disaster left many orphaned and vulnerable children without shelter or basic necessities. The reconstruction of the orphanage is urgent to provide a safe and secure environment for these children, addressing their critical needs for food, clean water, healthcare, and education, thus safeguarding their physical safety and mental health.
The Project We Fund
The project focuses on rebuilding the orphanage in Tamatave that was destroyed by Cyclone Gezani. It involves constructing resilient infrastructure to withstand future natural disasters, ensuring the availability of essential services like electricity, water, and proper sanitation. The project also includes educational support, equipping classrooms with modern learning tools and providing vocational training to foster holistic development among children.
