Ocean Alive Makes Waves in the News!

April 16, 2026

Seagrass meadows in Soltróia, Portugal are under increasing pressure due to improper navigation and anchoring. In response, our nonprofit partner, Ocean Alive is leading a vital initiative to protect and restore these ecosystems. Through the installation of eco-friendly mooring buoys, the project reduces damage to seagrass—an essential habitat that captures carbon and supports marine biodiversity. Working closely with local communities and policymakers, the initiative has already made measurable progress, directly impacting 537.13 m² of seagrass, with 204.18 m² showing encouraging signs of recovery.

The project is gaining significant recognition, with coverage on one of Portugal’s leading private television channels, SIC’s prime-time news and was also featured by Biosfera, an environmental program on RTP2, the country’s public service broadcaster. Additional media outlets, including Ambiente Magazine and SAPO, have also highlighted the initiative, with more features expected soon.

Beyond media reach which participates in raising awareness, the project will mobilize over 550 volunteers, students, educators, boat owners, and community members. Together, we are actively supporting the relocation of anchorages away from seagrass areas and preventing further damage. Through sustained advocacy and collaboration, Ocean Alive is driving meaningful change—locally and nationally—for the future of our oceans.
