Life Project 4 Youth (LP4Y)
Think Human Fund
Mission & History
Country Information
Indonesia, with over 280 million people, is the fourth most populous country, with 16% aged 15-24. Poverty affects youth significantly; among 46 million young people aged 15-24, about 23%—or 10 million—are out of school, employment, or training.
Climate change further exacerbates their challenges. Rural areas, home to nearly 55% of the population, face high climatic risks. Rising sea levels threaten northern Jakarta and Surabaya, where LP4Y centers are located. The slum population increased from 22% in 2014 to 31% in 2018, highlighting the growing economic and social inequalities exacerbated by environmental threats.
The Need in 2026
Building on its efforts from the past 2 years, LP4Y will continue to address youth unemployment in Indonesia, where worsening rates have forced many young people into precarious jobs such as street vending and waste picking without any legal protections. The program remains committed to tackling socio-economic disparities that are further exacerbated by climate change, with a focus on empowering youths to secure decent employment and become active, responsible citizens. By fostering youth inclusion and engaging in both national and international dialogues, LP4Y strives to close the socio-economic gap.
A key initiative is the ongoing Care4Change project in Cilincing, led by the youth, which ensures access to affordable clean water and provides community education on water health, while also promoting environmental sustainability through activities such as Sustainable Week and community clean-ups.
The Project We Fund
In 2026, LP4Y will carry forward its essential work in North Jakarta’s Cilincing area for its concluding year, addressing the challenges of pollution and slum development due to port expansion in this historically “Palm Beach” region. Committed to supporting 72 beneficiaries, the project continues to tackle significant socio-economic issues, including rising prostitution and limited employment opportunities, which lead many residents to work as fishermen, scavengers, or in coal factories. The initiative aims to bridge socio-economic gaps by empowering youths with the skills needed to secure decent jobs and become engaged, responsible citizens, thereby promoting youth inclusion and participation in both national and international dialogues.
The Care4Change initiative will remain a pivotal element of this effort, focusing on water-related challenges in Cilincing. Managed by the youth, the initiative will continue to provide affordable clean water and educate the community on water health. Throughout its final year, the project will steadfastly advocate for environmental sustainability through activities like Sustainable Week, community clean-ups, and promoting responsible waste disposal and hygiene practices, thereby reinforcing its positive impact on both the local environment and community well-being.
The Result
LP4Y (Life Project 4 Youth) will persist in its impactful mission by leveraging Key Impact Indicators (KIIs) to assess the effectiveness of youth integration into professional environments and to monitor program attendance and completion rates. The initiative will continue to uphold vital partnerships with companies to offer professional exposure and job opportunities, while also fostering Micro Economic Initiatives that enhance practical skills and financial independence. Weekly coaching sessions will remain central, concentrating on improving behavior, social skills, and job readiness. Following program completion, LP4Y will utilize the Central Youth Database to track the employment status and conditions of participants. Alumni will be invited to join the Star Club, ensuring ongoing engagement and support through monthly dinners, thereby maintaining continuous support and facilitating lasting integration into the real world.

The Need in 2024
Young people in Indonesia face alarming unemployment rates, with 26.12% of those aged 15-19 and 15.64% of those aged 20-24 unemployed in 2019. These figures have worsened to 24.34% and 18.71%, respectively. Many work in the informal economy—like street vendors and waste pickers—earning little and lacking legal protections.
Social and economic inequalities, compounded by climate change, disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.

Testimonies
“I am 20 years old and currently live in RawaMalang street, Cilincing, North Jakarta. I am the first of three children, born into a simple family. My father is a Batagor peddler, while my mother is a housewife. I graduated from SMAN 92 Jakarta in 2023. After finishing my education, I was unemployed for one year. Then, I joined graphic design training for 45 days, and after that worked as a freelancer at MOI as an outlet crew for one month. This experience gave me a deeper insight into the world of work and inspired me to seek greater opportunities. My decision to join LP4Y started with an invitation from my cousin. I chose to join because I wanted to fill my free time productively and get guidance in self-development, as well as opportunities to prepare myself for the world of work. In addition, I wanted to acquire more professional skills in order to get a decent job, while continuing to learn and develop through various training and social activities. Before I joined LP4Y, I was a young person who lacked confidence. I seemed to have lost my way to get what I wanted. I wanted to move forward, I wanted to start my dream but I didn’t know where to start because there was no one to guide me. However, I am grateful to be born to parents who never demanded from their children. I live in an environment where I think human resources are low. Many young people of my age choose to marry young because they think it is one of the solutions to improve their standard of living, but in my opinion it will only add to the problem. There are many negative impacts, such as on mental health and the economy. Mental health is an example, such as the teenage years, which should be used to start a career, continue education, play with friends, but must start taking care of the household. And for the impact on the economy, such as the difficulty of getting a job because of the age that is not enough so that it is difficult to meet the needs of the household and the lack of ability to manage finances in the household, of course this will only add to the problem. However, I am a young person who has different thoughts and desires from them. I wanted to have a decent job, I wanted to raise my family’s status and I wanted to break the stigma of “Women don’t need to have a high career because they will end up in the kitchen too”. I started taking steps to realize my dream and break the stigma by joining LP4Y. I believe that I am worthy and capable of fulfilling my dreams. And after I joined LP4Y, I have gained a lot of learning and experience such as attending a lot of training, how to make a good and correct CV, how to conduct a professional interview, learning English, and learning to manage a business (FYI we have a Micro Company or MC program commonly called Care 4 Change which aims to focus on public health), from the business I get a lot of learning such as Leadership, Responsibility, and Problem solving). In addition, from the activities that I undertook at LP4Y, it shaped me to become someone who is confident, brave to perform, and brave in public speaking. My hope in joining LP4Y is to become a more professional person so that I can get a decent job, and I also want to be someone who is useful for others by providing a positive influence.” –Anggriani Sulisati-
“After visiting Concentrix, I was truly inspired by how important communication skills and body language are in creating a successful work environment. There, I learned that communication is not just about speaking, but also about listening and understanding others. One of the most striking things was how positive body language such as smiles, eye contact, and an open attitude can create a warmer and more collaborative atmosphere. It’s not just about conveying information, but also about building trust and a real connection. Empathic listening is also emphasized as key to understanding the needs of clients and colleagues. This skill helps in solving problems more efficiently and forging stronger relationships. This visit opened my eyes that effective communication and awareness of body language can be the foundation of success in the professional world. I feel motivated.” –Muhammad Umar Arrafi-
