Founded in 2021, SIINAN has developed projects across several regions of Mexico, including Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Estado de México, and Mexico City. The organization collaborates with communities, institutions, and international partners to deliver projects in ecological restoration, citizen science, and environmental education, building a strong track record in community-based conservation initiatives.

It focuses on biodiversity protection, ecological restoration, and environmental education while strengthening local capacities for sustainable development.
Country Information
Mexico’s wetlands are under increasing pressure from urbanization, pollution, and climate change. In Xochimilco—one of the last remaining wetland systems and a UNESCO-listed site—ecosystem degradation, including poor water quality and habitat loss, threatens biodiversity, especially the endangered axolotl, as well as the livelihoods and cultural traditions of local communities.
The Need
Xochimilco is facing increasing environmental degradation, including declining water quality, biodiversity loss, and the deterioration of traditional chinampa agriculture. These challenges threaten local livelihoods, cultural heritage, and the long-term health of one of Mexico’s most important wetland ecosystems. Strengthening community-based restoration and stewardship is essential to preserve these ecosystems.
The Project We Fund
The project strengthens climate resilience and ecological restoration in the Xochimilco wetlands through community-based actions, including canal rehabilitation and reconnection, biofilter installation, water quality improvement, reforestation with native ahuejote trees, and environmental education. It restores degraded ecosystems, supports biodiversity (including habitats for the axolotl), and promotes long-term community stewardship.
Volunteer game-changers can engage directly in restoration efforts through tree planting, community nursery work, canal clean-ups, environmental education activities, and biodiversity monitoring—helping improve ecosystem health while strengthening local community capacity.
The Result
The project’s expected results focus on measurable improvements in ecosystem restoration and community engagement, directly benefiting 35 participants. Impact is tracked through indicators such as the number of rehabilitated canals, improved water quality, restored hydrological connectivity, and the successful growth of native vegetation, alongside community participation in restoration activities and nursery development. Continuous monitoring through field visits, photographic records, and evaluations ensures effective implementation, leading to strengthened wetlands, enhanced biodiversity, and sustained community stewardship.
