Mission & History
IMC Weekendschool is dedicated to preparing youth from all social classes and educational levels to play an active role in society, emphasizing the importance of motivation as the pinnacle of educational achievement.
Founded in 1997, this organization empowers young people by feeding their curiosity with real-life subject matter through volunteer experts. Through a unique three-year program, known as ToekomstExpeditie (Future Expedition), students are encouraged to explore future possibilities, recognize their capabilities, and build confidence to pursue their interests. This initiative aims to reduce inequality within the Dutch education system by equipping marginalized youth with essential skills and knowledge.
Country Information
Operating in the largest cities and underprivileged neighborhoods across the Netherlands, IMC Weekendschool focuses on creating equal opportunities for students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The program is particularly aimed at communities typically marginalized, ensuring that all students have access to the quality education and support necessary to succeed. With 35 project locations, the initiative seeks to foster inclusivity and social mobility through education.
The Need
IMC Weekendschool identifies the need to empower young people, particularly from underprivileged neighborhoods in the Netherlands, by providing them with access to education that develops both academic and essential life skills. With ToekomstExpeditie (Future Expedition), as its guiding educational philosophy, the program addresses inequalities in the education system by offering a comprehensive curriculum that includes subjects like science, law, music, philosophy, and entrepreneurship. This approach aims to cultivate skills such as presentation, collaboration, and conflict resolution, ensuring students are well-prepared for future challenges.
The Project We Fund
The funded project includes a technology course offered at two IMC Weekendschool locations. This course introduces students to computational thinking, programming, and algorithms, emphasizing critical engagement with technological developments. Led by volunteer experts from the tech sector, the project includes interactive lessons on computational thinking, algorithms, human-machine interaction, and problem-solving with technology, thereby expanding students’ digital literacy and critical thinking skills.
The Result
The IMC Weekendschool project has demonstrated a significant impact by empowering students with knowledge and skills that extend beyond the classroom. The program aims to reach 2,300 students as direct beneficiaries and 10,000 indirect beneficiaries including guest teachers, school coordinators, parents, and communities. The initiative has been successful in fostering social cohesion, enhancing youth engagement, and providing alumni opportunities to give back, thus sustaining and expanding the program’s impact.
